Compass 6371 2.5 Way Loudspeaker

CP-6371 2 way floorstanding loudspeakerThe usher Audio 6371 2.5 way three drive floorstanding loudspeakers combines all the attributes you expect of HIAudio and Usher Audio. Superb finish, impeccable sound, affordable pricing.

Hi Fi + Product of the year 2008

In the words of a Hi Fi Journalist and design engineer.

These loudspeakers are definitely not as visually unobtrusive as some of the mini monitors can be. Their visual impact is extremely striking. At over 1 metre tall this loudspeaker system requires a large room to extract the very best from it. Finished in piano black, or white, with timber side cheeks, in an effort to reduce sidewall resonance and the baffle slopes backward to aid the dispersion pattern from the loudspeaker.

Included with the loudspeaker is a space frame support system, which is spiked to the floor and fixed to the cabinet by four bolts. At the bottom of the cabinet there lies a chamber that should be filled with dry sand, this lowers the centre of gravity, making the transducer even more stable. The mass of the cabinet is commendably high at almost 48 Kilogram's. Drive unit line up consists of; two seven inch bass/midrange units and a one-inch silk domed treble unit. All of the drive units are designed and manufactured in-house by Usher.

The input terminals are extremely well designed and will accept bare wires and 4mm terminations. The receptacle plate is wide enough for even the largest of cable looms even if BI-wiring is desired although the terminal jumpers should be removed before attempting this.

These loudspeakers describe en enormous stereo image with swathes of image depth, gigantic height along with tremendous width. Frequency response from this reflex ported cabinet is 32 Hertz-28kHertz (-3dB) with strong bass delivery along with a very smooth upper midrange to treble transition. Efficiency of the CP-6371 is quoted as 90 dB for one watt of input power so this transducer will match even the smallest of valve amplifiers. Although care must be taken when connecting to the amplifier as the overall impedance is set at 4 ohms. Nominal power requirements are 110 watts RMS. Designed by Dr D'Appolito these loudspeakers are a testament to his design skills!

The character of this loudspeaker is minimal! Although it reproduces vinyl with almost leach like accuracy there is just a touch of upper bass warmth. This is undoubtedly due to the reflex loading technique. Careful positioning can be used to obviate this. The sound delivered from this impressive loudspeaker is rich, but not at the expense of the delicacy from the upper mid to treble balance. With a powerful bass representation and a stereo image we can almost walk around in, the emotion of the musicians is represented with an accuracy I have rarely heard. After the loudspeaker has been installed this is truly a formidable transducer.

Dr. Joe D'Appolito describes some aspects of the design philosophy for these floorstanding loudspeakers.

"The design goals for the CP6371 were flat on-axis response and broad uniform horizontal polar response. The first goal yields accurate first arrival information critical to imaging. The second goal assures a balanced reverberant field and broadens the sweet spot. This is required because we judge overall frequency balance psycho-acoustically by fusing (i.e., integrating) direct and reflected arrivals over a period of 5-30 milliseconds (the Haas fusion zone). To this end, the CP6371 is a two and one-half way (2.5-way) system. The lower woofer crosses out at 350Hz to prevent combing response errors in the vertical plane. It doubles the low-bass output and compensates for the spreading loss."

"The overall woofer pair/tweeter crossover is an acoustic 4th-order in-phase linkwitz alignment at 2450Hz. The crossover uses heavy gauge air core coils and quality film capacitors mounted on glass fiber reinforced printed circuit boards."

"All the drivers used in the CP6371 (and all the Series 6 speakers) have been designed by Mr. Tsai and are manufactured in-house by Usher. Here are some details on the drivers: Two 8945A woofers are used in the CP6371. The 8945A woofer is a very sophisticated low-distortion woofer. It comprises a cast aluminium frame and a carbon fiber filled paper cone, a T-shaped pole piece with copper shorting ring and copper sleeve Low-loss linear suspension with a large flat spider and large half-roll surround. The sophisticated motor yields very low distortion at high SPLs. The T9950 is a very low-distortion tweeter with a 28mm coated silk dome, an aluminium voice coil former, optimised pole piece geometry, large rear chamber for low resonance and light ferro-fluid damping. Internal wiring is four 9s OFC and the connectors are by Faston." Jo D'Appolito

Well that's from the co designer, what have press said?

"Amplifier wise, the 6371s sounded really good with the Electrocompaniet AW-220s but I had the most enjoyment with the Soaring Audio SLC-A300 and the Conrad Johnson MF2500A driving them. I enjoyed the speed and transient response of the 6371/Soaring Audio combination as well as the fuller, warmer bass and a larger stage and with the level of musicality that the speakers had with the 2500A. All in all, with awesome fit and finish, excellent musical performance, and a real-world price, you get an extremely good value for your money. It's not hard at all to give these speakers a very high recommendation. Mike Wright, StereoTimes July 2004.

Bass is superbly controlled on these models by the addition of sand or lead shot to the rear compartment so designed. HIAudio strongly recommend this is filled. the bass response from these speakers is designed to be at its best with this tray filled. Lead or sand have a similar profound effect. once you've listened to them with the cavity filled, you won't want to listen with it empty. The bass registers tighten and go even deeper, whilst the midband steps forward just a little providing an even sound stage with vocalists in musicians sighted correctly in the place. You have been warned!

These speakers are available in piano Black, Ivory White, F-Red, G-Yellow and Platinum Silver.
