The all new Music Mat from the Cartridge Man has been long in researching, but it has finally been cracked. So if you own an old Thorens TD125/150/160 and are fed up of the ringing platter, then get one, if you own an LP12 and don't like the bloom low down, then get one. If you are an Acoustic Signature owner and don't like the ringing platter, get one. We could go on and on and on. But the idea of damping down a platter has been long sought after, Clearaudio use different materials, Garrard 301 and 401 the Bastin Rings, All work to a greater or lesser degree. But we have tried The Music Mat from The Cartridge Man against materials as far out as Sound Dead Steel, Cork, latex, leather and blends thereof all we know The Music Mat it works.
The main improvement comes from the damping effect placing a 12" soft rubber mat on your platter has. All platter ringing and transmission of mechanical noise is stopped. The use of a clamp is not recomended. So what does this mean. Well quite simply, we found we achieved a clearer more coherent image from the music, with the sound stage increasing in both depth and width. Our reference mats were a Ringmat Support System leather mat (suede side up) and early TCM pre production mats.
